Seeking interns for fieldwork on cetacean acoustic data collection,
NE-Iceland.

The research center in Húsavík is looking for an intern to assist a MSc
student in performing fieldwork in cetacean research in Skjálfandi Bay,
NE-Iceland. The goal of the fieldwork is to collect acoustic and
behavioural data of humpback whales.

Biological background is a requirement. Prior experience working on
cetaceans and/or an inflatable boat is not required but would be
preferred.

The work obligations consist of:
-Going out to the bay with the MSc student on an inflatable boat,
operating the boat itself is not required,
-Operating hydrophone equipment, and
-Assisting in the data collection during these tours.

The fieldwork is weather dependent, only going out in safe and stable sea
condition.

Take notice! Applicants should be very aware of the cold weather
conditions in this part of Iceland, especially out at sea and this close
to the arctic. The Arctic Circle is located few nautical miles north of
the bay and cold wind usually comes in from the north. Keep that in mind
when applying, as the minimum research period is from mid-June to mid-July
2013. Priority will be given to applicants who can stay for the whole
research period, be sure to prepare for cold and yet exciting working
environment!

Intern who fulfills all of his/her obligations will get full
acknowledgements for assisting in collecting data and being a part of the
fieldwork.

This fieldwork offers a good opportunity for obtaining valuable experience
in marine mammal research and fieldwork in marine environment.
