Description of post
The position of General Secretary in the Secretariat of the North Atlantic 
Marine Mammal
Commission (NAMMCO) becomes vacant 1st March 2015, and applications for the 
position
are welcomed. The Secretariat, with a staff of three, is based in Tromsø in 
northern Norway,
and services member countries Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and Norway in 
this
intergovernmental Regional Fisheries Management Organisation. English is the 
official
language of the Commission.

The purpose of NAMMCO is to provide sound, scientifically-based sustainable 
management
and conservation advice on marine mammals in the North Atlantic. More 
information about
NAMMCO and its work can be found at www.nammco.no .

The General Secretary is an Official of the Commission according to the Host 
Agreement
between NAMMCO and Norway, and is granted privileges and immunities in the 
interest of
the Commission. The General Secretary is Head of the Secretariat and is overall 
responsible
for the administrative management of the Secretariat and its staff. The General 
Secretary is
responsible to the members of the Commission for the coordination and 
administration of its
work, including the preparation and administration of annual meetings and the 
Commission's
published Annual Reports, website, and is also responsible for developing and 
maintaining
contacts with other relevant international organisations and non-member 
governments. The
General Secretary performs the official functions of the Secretariat of the 
Commission.
The post is initially for a four-year period, with the possibility of extension 
at the end of this
term. Performance is assessed annually.

The position involves a minimum of six weeks overseas travel per year in 
connection with
meetings and other events.

The salary, which is taxed at a level compatible with the relevant Norwegian 
tax level, will be
commensurate with the qualifications required of the position and in line with 
salaries for
similar posts in other international organisations according to the ICSC/UN 
salary scales and
will be negotiable within the professional UN scale P4 to P5. There is an 
annual paid holiday
allowance of 30 working days, a private pension scheme, as well as assistance 
in relocation
expenses. Paid travel home for the employee (and family) is offered annually. 
Under the terms
of the Host Agreement, the employee will also benefit from the Norwegian social 
services
system with reference to health care and state pension.

Qualifications and Experience
The General Secretary should have a higher university degree in a relevant 
field of study such
as fisheries, life sciences, environment or wildlife management; several years' 
working
experience with, and an excellent understanding of, international cooperation 
in the field of
conservation and management of natural resources. Good leadership and 
managerial skills are
required.

The General Secretary should have excellent communication skills and fluency in 
written and
spoken English, as well as experience with the preparation and editing in 
English of reports
and publications and computer literacy.

A working knowledge of a Scandinavian language is advantageous.
