Tenure-track Faculty Position in Marine Mammal Biology
Biology Department, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)

The Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)
invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position on our Scientific
Staff. We seek outstanding candidates to complement our existing
interdisciplinary strengths in biology, biological oceanography, and marine
ecology (www.whoi.edu/biology <http://www.whoi.edu/biology>). We are
particularly interested in applicants who conduct research in marine mammal
physiology or pathophysiology. Expertise may include (but is not limited to)
health assessment, stress, stranding, diving physiology, functional morphology
or disease. The new hire will have access to a state-of-the-art necropsy
laboratory as well as the opportunity to further develop our computed
tomography (CT) scanner facility. Candidates with expertise in other aspects of
marine mammal biology are also encouraged to apply. We seek to hire at the
Assistant Scientist level; however, extraordinary candidates may be considered
at Associate Scientist without Tenure, Associate Scientist with Tenure, or
Senior Scientist levels.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree, postdoctoral experience, and a record
of scientific research publications in scholarly journals. WHOI scientific
staff members are expected to develop an internationally recognized and
externally funded research program. They have the opportunity to advise
graduate students and teach courses in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in
Oceanography and Oceanographic Engineering (www.whoi.edu/jointprogram
<http://www.whoi.edu/jointprogram>). Opportunities for interdisciplinary
research exist through collaboration with the other science departments
(Applied Ocean Science and Engineering, Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry,
Marine Geology and Geophysics, and Physical Oceanography;
www.whoi.edu/main/departments-centers-labs
<http://www.whoi.edu/main/departments-centers-labs>) and WHOI’s Marine Policy
Center (www.whoi.edu/main/mpc <http://www.whoi.edu/main/mpc>), as well as with
researchers in the broader Woods Hole scientific community. Members of WHOI’s
Scientific Staff are expected to provide for their salaries from grants and
contracts, but the Institution provides salary support when no other funding is
available. The Institution also promotes the development of innovative research
through significant internal funding opportunities. Candidates hired at the
Assistant Scientist level will receive an initial appointment for four years
with salary guaranteed while they develop their external funding portfolio.
Female and minority applicants are particularly encouraged to apply. WHOI is
sensitive to the issues of dual career scientists and will help to identify and
explore available dual-career options. WHOI’s benefits package includes
vacation time, a generous 403(b) employer contribution retirement plan, medical
and dental plans, parental leave, child-care subsidy, employee and family
illness days and flexible scheduling.

WHOI is the largest private, non-profit oceanographic institution in the world,
with resident staff, postdocs and students numbering approximately 1,000. An
additional 500 affiliates are associated with the scientific endeavors of the
Institution, many of whom are foreign nationals from around the world. Our
mission is to advance understanding of the ocean and its interaction with the
Earth system, and to communicate this understanding for the benefit of society.
The Institution is located in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, a world-renowned
center of excellence in marine, biomedical, and environmental science.
