The North Gulf Oceanic Society (http://www.whalesalaska.org/) has an opportunity for a research associate to conduct research on the population genetics of cetaceans in Alaska. We seek a research associate with an advanced degree to work on a fixed term contract analyzing RADseq and GT-seq data.  The primary focus will be analyzing a SNP dataset to characterize the population genetic structure and seascape genomics of harbor porpoise in Alaska.  The candidate will be responsible for quantitative data analyses, results presentation, report writing and contributing to manuscripts. Genetic and genomic research conducted by the North Gulf Oceanic Society focuses broadly on the development and application of molecular genetic approaches to support the conservation and management of cetaceans in Alaska.

 

Candidates for this position should have (1) a Master’s or PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a related field, (2) demonstrated experience with analysis of population structure and genetic diversity from multilocus datasets, (3) excellent analytical skills, including experience with R and command line programming,  (4) the ability and desire to work as part of a larger collaborative team, (5) excellent problem solving, organizational and critical thinking skills, (6) experience writing & contributing to primary scientific publications.

 

The position will be located in Seattle, WA with an immediate start date. Work is expected to be completed by August 31, 2020, with potential for future expansion into additional projects.  The value of the fixed term contract will be dependent on the ideal candidate’s professional experience and education qualifications ($4132 - $7180/month). Opportunities for remote working will be considered for candidates with exceptional references and demonstrated abilities for independent research under remote and/or telework conditions.
