Summary of Job Responsibilities - Regional Stranding Coordinator, Pacific
Islands Region
This position serves as the Regional Stranding Coordinator (RSC) for the NOAA
Fisheries, Pacific Islands Region. The RSC ensures coordination of marine
mammal stranding response across Hawai'i, American Samoa, Guam, and the
Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and works with NOAA
island-specific coordinators on O'ahu, Maui, and Kaua'i. Under the MMPA, the
RSC is designated with specific responsibilities including serving as the lead
for developing and overseeing Stranding Agreements with external partners for
marine mammal response, and receiving, evaluating, and preparing marine mammal
parts authorization letters. The RSC also serves as the regional representative
for national initiatives and grants, and as a point of contact with other
agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy. A key aspect of the RSC’s
work in the Pacific Islands Region will be to work closely with Native Hawaiian
and Territorial partners to develop and increase partnerships and collaboration
on marine mammal stranding response, particularly cetacean stranding response.
