Dear Colleagues, It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Wojciech (Wojtek) Bachara, who passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026. Wojtek was an independent Polish researcher and a deeply dedicated expert on beaked whales (Ziphiidae). For many years, he untiringly managed the Beaked Whales World Stranding Database, collaborating with marine mammal scientists and institutions across the globe. His passion, vast knowledge, and readiness to help anyone investigating these elusive cetaceans made him a highly valued member of the international marine mammalogy community. His sudden departure is an immense loss to all of us and to the field of cetology. The funeral service will be held in Warsaw, Poland, on Friday, September 25, 2026. The holy mass will begin at 13:00 (1:00 PM) at the Church of St. Anthony of Padua (ul. Czerniakowska 2/4, Warsaw), followed by the burial at the Czerniakowski Cemetery. If you would like to send condolences to the family or have any inquiries regarding the future preservation of his scientific data and database, please contact us at: [email protected]. Sincerely, Krzysztof Lange Nephew of Wojciech Bachara (on behalf of the family) |
