*Advancing marine mammal conservation through omics tools and integration
of Indigenous Ecological Knowledge*

Advances in omics technologies are transforming how we study marine
mammals, but there is enormous potential in bringing these tools together
with Indigenous Ecological Knowledge.

Indigenous Peoples have shaped our understanding of marine ecosystems,
species behaviour and environmental change through generations of
observation, experience and connection to Country and Sea Country. This
knowledge has already contributed profoundly to conservation, challenging
and expanding how we understand the natural world.

In this paper, we develop a framework for integrating omics approaches with
Indigenous Ecological Knowledge, bringing together scientific researchers
and Indigenous practitioners to explore how these knowledge systems can
inform marine mammal conservation.

As a research community, we have both an opportunity and an obligation to
do this better. This means moving beyond acknowledgement towards meaningful
collaboration, where Indigenous knowledge holders help shape the questions
we ask, the research we conduct and the outcomes we pursue.

We are excited about the potential for this framework to help put these
commitments into practice.

A huge thank you to our co-authors, Indigenous practitioners and
collaborators who contributed to this work.
