In my post, I attempted to focus on *elminating* tradeoffs, instead of exploring them. This was a *big* problem in coming up with an example. I needed, to make my self clear, present a particular programmer making a choice. This unfortunately focuses on the choice, and not on the infrastructure that framed the set of choices, which is my main concern.

But re the choices. There are cases for and against significant whitespace. The case against it is that it forces a specific layout on your program, and that it can present issues when cutting-and-pasting, and when reformatting code for publication, etc. If you're pursing a totally flexible syntax, of course, you don't want significant whitespace.

Interesting post. As an aside, made me wonder how ambiguity is related to (more) forgiving syntax, e.g. allowing newline as a statement separator in addition to semicolon makes syntax more forgiving (well, arguably), but removes ambiguity (fork <https://gist.github.com/rns/c7e977b7f6ce688ee954> of the gist, diff <https://gist.github.com/rns/c7e977b7f6ce688ee954/revisions>).
