One change I'd suggest: "And all this takes place in a single pass of
the input stream, i.e. very efficiently indeed." Well, I do think it's
efficient, but it is *not* single-pass.

It's good to get this out of the way, since at $work there's been a
minor disaster (not of my making) which, next week, I'll probably have
to handle by switching from part-time to full-time for 2 months. We'll
see.
