@David: Thanks for bringing Judy arrays to my attention. And in fact, they and Marpa seem to be comparable in the sense you state -- achieving results through (alas!) complexity. I originally wanted Marpa to be simple & elegant, like a late Picasso drawing. That didn't happen. But a Hieronymus Bosch is also beautiful, just in a different way.
