most of the changes have come about after suggestions from webservices 
users - after people started using the biomart/R interface there was an 
understandable move to get the names for filters and attributes the same 
and to try and make the names more human-readable (ie) matching the 
display names.

hopefully all the suggestions have come in now and we will stablise a 
bit but like Arek says, some names even in ensembl are beyond our control, 
and for 
external marts we have no control. I just wanted to point out we didn't 
really change any names for our own purposes - our API is happy to work 
with the previous really dumb internal names :)

What is the usual approach taken in webservices to keep track of name 
changes in external software? Presumably just hoping people don't change 
them is not the approach being taken as that is doomed to failure. Is 
there some sort of format to represent the old->new name mappings that 
people typically use?
