The error message suggests that you have logged into your own desktop
machine, then opened a shell on some central server and are trying to
run martshell.sh from there.
You can solve this by running it locally on your desktop machine, or by
allowing remote X Windows connections to your desktop machine by
following these steps:
1. Find out your desktop machine's IP (from here on called <yourip>).
2. Find out the server's IP (from here on called <serverip>).
3. In a shell on your desktop machine type:
xhost +<serverip>
4. In a shell on your server machine prefix the martshell.sh command
with DISPLAY=<yourip>:0.0, similar to this:
DISPLAY=<yourip>:0.0 ./martshell.sh
It should now work.
cheers,
Richard
