download it and run it without problems now.

Ah, you are correct! I looked closely and found a bug in the Ant build
file that we use to construct the binary distributions. It was
forgetting to include the log4j jar file in the distribution.
I have fixed the bug, but we need to rebuild the distribution and
update
it on our website. One of us will let you know when this has been
done.
Alternatively, if you'd prefer not to wait, you can download martj
from
CVS and compile it yourself using Ant, following the instructions
given
in the documentation that you can download from www.biomart.org. The
version in CVS has already had the correction made.
