Fair enough. Two flights of B52s took off from English bases this morning
their time. Primakov has turned his plane around, promptly cancelling his
trip to Washington. He's undertaken to support Serbia if and when those
B52s unload their 'ordnance'.

This has all been sadly inevitable for a few months now. NATO has to
invade, 'honour' demands it, and won't make any headway if Milosovic doesn't
want them to. Serbs who hated him yesterday will stick by him if Serbia is
attacked. If Milosovic stays his ground, it's almost inevitable troops will
have to follow the ordnance in to the sort of terrain (and against the sort
of opposition) the whole Wehrmacht couldn't budge in five years.

This is a cross between 1914 (Russia goes with the Serbs and Germany goes to
the opposite side of the fence in a contest ignited by the Balkans but about
imperial sway) and 1939 (appeasement followed by war and the involvement of
a powerful and nationalistic state in desperate search of a return to status
initially taken from them by those they now confront).

European states are at war. Crikey, we're gonna be watching Luftwaffe
planes bombing European targets again! Tragedy and farce, eh?

If the Yanks send troops in, or if they attack a Russian armements shipment,
or if the Croats join in, or if Mujihadeen contingents attack Serbia from
Albania, or ... oh, shit. This could be anything ...

Why?

How dare the British be part of an invasion justified on grounds of a state
committing atrocities against separatists? And have the Turks the hide to
join in? Why are tens of thousands of Kosovan Muslims in a province of
Serbia worth risks hundreds of thousands of Bosnian Muslims in their own
state were not worth?

Why?

Thoughts?
Rob.
