Trouble with this theory is that, back during Yeltsin's first war against
Chechnya, Clinton's U.S. backed Russia all the way. The imperialists
know their comrades-in-blood when they see them in action.

Did they Walter? I doubt it. More of a realization that a military
confrontation with the ex Soviet Union at present ain't such a good idea.
The Americans appear to have a dua policy of supporting through the CIA
activities in the republics (especially raw material rich republics) of the
opposition to the central regime. While supporting Yeltsin in Russia. My
guess is that they see this strategy as long term weakening of the whole and
they still got a nuclear arsenal which is capable of wiping out a good part
of the U.S.
