TAX PLANNING FOR REAL ESTATE OWNERS



To be handled as an interactive session led by experienced practitioners in
the tax, real estate and estate planning areas. Topics covered:  Entity
selection; Ownership/allocation structuring; Drafting of operating (or
partnership) agreements; Like-kind and reverse like-kind exchanges; Estate
planning for real estate owners.

William B. Acker is a shareholder and director of Kemp, Klein, Umphrey &
Endelman, P.C.  He is a member of the Council of the Real Property Law
Section and Chair of the Real Property Law Section's Federal Tax Aspects of
Real Estate Transactions Committee.  He concentrates on business and estate
planning, including planning for real property transactions, tax matters and
controversies.  He has authored articles for the Journal of Taxation, State
Bar Journal, this Review, the Tax Section's "Michigan Tax Lawyer," and other
professional publications.  He has lectured in the Real Property Law
Section's Homeward Bound series, the Tax Section's After Hours Tax Seminars,
has lectured for the Real Property Section of the ABA and ICLE.  Mr. Acker
is a member of the ICLE Real Property Advisory Board.

 

DEAN A. ROCHELEAU is a tax partner with Plante & Moran, PLLC in Southfield.
Mr. Rocheleau advises clients and consults with attorneys concerning the
income tax and business aspects of their real estate and construction
operations.  He is an active member of the State Bar of Michigan Taxation
and Real Property Law Sections and a frequent presenter on income tax
related topics including like kind exchanges, choice of entity, and
partnership and S corporation taxation.

 

RICHARD A. SHAPACK, Butzel Long, P.C., Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  His
practice is concentrated in business law, real estate and estate planning
with special emphasis on tax planning.  Mr. Shapack is a Fellow of the
American College of Tax Counsel, A Fellow of American College of Trust and
Estate Counsel and is certified by the Florida Bar as a Board Certified Tax
Lawyer.  He has been a speaker at numerous ABA Real Property and Tax Section
meetings, the State Bar of Michigan Real Property Law Section, ICLE, the Tax
Management Real Estate Advisory Board and the NYU Real Estate Institute.
