Violent incidents in new Panamericana picket

The Lear labour conflict has led to a new protest with workers blocking the
Panamericana highway for at least the third time this month. The picket
turned violent as riot police sought to clear the road and prevent
demonstrators from entering the US auto-parts company.

30 Lear employees have been reinstated over the past days. However, workers
took to the streets again this morning saying “the conflict persists
because 110 remain fired.”

The automotive sector has faced reduced domestic and external demand for
its products, with a 35.5 percent drop in new car sales in April and at
least 12,000 suspensions of workers at several car companies. Production
also dropped 16 percent in the first quarter of the year.

To cope with the sector's pressing situation, the federal goverment
recently reached key bilateral agreements with Brazil - Argentina's main
regional trade partner -, with Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich explaining
negotiations aimed at “strenghtening auto parts production levels, creating
financing conditions and boosting demand in both domestic markets.”
