Steve Early may be overly enthusiastic about a Sanders campaign and as long as it is in the Democratic Party, such "enthusiasm" is misplaced. Whether Louis thinks Sanders is a socialist by whatever criteria he holds, most people think he is, he thinks he is and for all intents and purposes in a pre-revolutionary situation he is. What he would be in a revolutionary context I don't know. But the critical step today is the possible break to the left from the Democratic Party. Sanders is really the only hope of that in any meaningful way. Personally, I don't think he will break with the Democrats. Too bad. But the point is that unless someone with the name recognition of Sanders and the ability by virtue of that to drive a wedge between unanimous union support for Hillary and the Democratic Party and to gain the attention and an audience in the U.S. we are not going anywhere. The abject failure of the radical left to engage with Sanders, to facilitate his campaigns in their own press, to pay attention to what he does on the floor of the Senate is indicative of the rigid fear that leftists have of "contamination." In reality, a modern day sectarian is someone who is afraid of being, called an opportunist. If Sanders runs as an independent (and, unfortunately, Early isn't calling for that), we can't miss the chance to take advantage of such a campaign. If he can't be convinced to change his stance on Gaza have to live with it, and it won't keep us from attacking that position while working for a Sanders campaign and education all we come in contact with on the issue - both of opposing Israeli imperialism and the need for supporting a Third Party campaign, false vessel and all. "There is a tide in the affairs of men Which taken at the flood leads on to fortune. Omitted , all the voyage of their life Is bound in shallows and miseries. On such a sea are we now afloat And we must take it when it serves Or lose our virtues." -----Original Message----- From: Louis Proyect via Marxism <[email protected]> To: Wayne M. I think that Early is a great labor journalist but this article is surprisingly one-sided both for calling Sanders a "socialist" and for failing to reference his kowtowing to the Israel lobby. http://telesurtv.net/english/opinion/Lone-Socialist-Senator-in-the-U.S.-Ponders-A-2016-Presidential-Run-20140904-0009.html ________________________________________________ Send list submissions to: [email protected] Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/shacht%40aol.com ________________________________________________ Send list submissions to: [email protected] Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
