//

By *Rupen Savoulian*
September 4, 2014 -- The Islamic Resistance Movement -- Hamas is the abbreviation from the Arabic -- has constituted the democratically elected government of the Palestinian territories since January 2006. It swept to power in that year, winning a majority of seats in the Palestinian parliament, amid recognition of the failure of the traditional secular nationalist Palestinian parties, in particular the Fatah party that had dominated the Palestinian leadership for decades.

   Iraq: West for pushes yet another Crusade
   <http://links.org.au/node/4041>

By *Tony Iltis*
September 7, 2014 --In a speech at the Council of Clermont on November 27, 1095, Pope Urban II used allegations of the persecution of Christians in the Holy Land to launch a series of military adventures by the warrior aristocracies of feudal Christian western Europe against the Muslim civilisations of the Middle East. The ensuing two centuries of religious wars, or Crusades, were characterised by land-grabbing, plunder and the massacre of Muslims, Jews and non-Catholic Christians. Listening to the Australian parliament on September 1 debating a motion on human rights in Iraq, it was difficult not to be reminded of Pope Urban's speech.

   Spain: Podemos and the dynamic reorganisation of the left
   <http://links.org.au/node/4038>

By *Mario Candeias*
September 3, 2014 -- It is no longer enough to win over civil society, occupy public spaces, take to the streets, carry out symbolic actions, prevent evictions or to win plebiscites. In Spain movements for "real democracy" are setting a course to capture institutions -- albeit with the aim to recreate these institutions in a constitutive process in the interests of "real democracy".

   Climate and collusion: 'The window to halt runaway climate change is
   closing fast' <http://links.org.au/node/4035>

By*Patrick Bond*, Durban
August 30, 2014 -- The movement from below to tackle climate change is gathering pace in South Africa and elsewhere in the world in advance of the September 21 mass march against the United Nations. Environmentalists lead, but this struggle invokes the world's greatest class-race-gender-North-South conflicts, too. Ban Ki-Moon's heads-of-state summit on September 23 may generate greater publicity for the cause, but if, as anticipated, world rulers simply slap each other on the back, activists will have to even more urgently intensify the pressure.

Links seeks to promote the international exchange of information, experience of struggle, theoretical analysis and views of political strategy and tactics within the international left. It is a forum for open and constructive dialogue between active socialists coming from different political traditions. It seeks to bring together those in the international left who are opposed to neoliberal economic and social policies. It aims to promote the renewal of the socialist movement in the wake of the collapse of the bureaucratic model of "actually existing socialism" in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
