Slavery was a peculiar labor system used by the Southern planters to raise crops like cotton for use within a global capitalist system. At the same time, they regularly relied on hiring labor when they needed it, so even if we are very rigid about this, we'd have to see their social identity under a strobe light. At the same time, slaves were workers.
