Like most people my age, my memory ain't as sharp as it used to be but
I'll be damned if I'd spend money on "memory games". Instead I develop
my own exercises--who knows if they work--but they are free and
relatively painless. What I do is pick a category like jazz musicians or
baseball, something I am familiar with, and go through the alphabet
naming people, the quota based on the difficulty of the category.
Right now I am working on the letter E for baseball, trying to come up
with 5 names. I have come up with these: Dock Ellis, Dwight Evans, Evers
(the Cub infielder of Tinkers to Evers to Chance fame, couldn't remember
his first name), Carl Erskine, and Dennis Eckersley. Now I move on to F.
I also do crossword puzzles and computer chess to keep the neurons firing.
Thank god for the Internet. When a name escapes me, I can always come up
with it through google. Like the case, for example, of trying to
remember the name of the CP leader who implemented the Popular Front, I
enter "cpusa roosevelt support popular front" and--bingo--this comes up:
Communist Party USA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_Party_USA
Wikipedia
The CPUSA was adamantly opposed to fascism during the Popular Front
period. ... ordered Stalinist Browder to change the CPUSA's support for
Roosevelt.
