EU offers Greece €2bn in development funds
RTE News and Current Affairs
Dublin, March 20

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker has said he is making €2
billion of unused EU development funds available to Greece as it
battles a cash crunch.

Mr Juncker made the offer after crisis talks yesterday between
Greece's new prime minister Alexis Tsipras and European leaders to
shore up Greece's faltering EU-IMF bailout.

"This will not be used to fill Greece's coffers, but to support
efforts to create growth and social cohesion in Greece," targeting
especially youth unemployment, Mr Juncker told a press conference at
the end of a two-day summit.
. . .
Meanwhile, Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has criticised remarks made by
Taoiseach Enda Kenny about Greece.

Mr Adams said Mr Kenny's remarks regarding Greece at the EU summit in
Brussels "show that he has moved from being the architect of austerity
in Ireland to an austerity adviser to the EU elite."

He added that although both Greece and Ireland had an unfair debt
burden imposed on their citizens, Mr Kenny has consistently taken the
side of the EU against the people of Greece.

EU offers Greece two billion euros to boost growth, help with
'humanitarian crisis'
Reuters, March 20
BRUSSELS - The European Union has two billion euros ready for Greece
to use in projects that would boost the country's economic growth
potential, cut youth unemployment and help the poorest citizens,
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said.

The Commission has already set up a team of officials to help Greece
absorb the money as part of its efforts to help alleviate what
Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras calls a "humanitarian crisis"
after years of recession, Juncker told a news conference.
