Catron wrote in response to John E: "The only thing I've discredited was a factual claim about the campaign that couldn't withstand five seconds of Googling, not the campaign itself. If you fellows are going to be such drama queens when it comes to matters of fact, it would behoove you to be more careful with your factual statements." How odd that Catron's "five seconds of googling" didn't turn this up: "A designation under New Zealand legislation freezes the assets of terrorist entities and makes it a criminal offence to participate in or support the activities of the designated terrorist entity. This includes in particular dealing with the property of the designated terrorist entity or making property or financial services available to the entity. Other support for terrorist activities such as fundraising and recruiting or harbouring terrorists is a criminal offence whether a group is designated or not." This is from the official NZ Police site and is only the third paragraph down in the section on 'Designated Terrorist Entities'. It took me five seconds to find it. Indeed, I had already pointed out in an earlier email that it's not just groups on the official list that it is not legal to raise funds for in NZ; that the NZ government uses the EU and Canadian lists too. I also noted that the NZ government and state are not so stupid as to tie their hands by only being able to prosecute people actively supporting groups on the official list. They give themselves far more leeway than that - this should really be clear to people with any knowledge of how an effective capitalist state apparatus operates. So my original statement that it is illegal in NZ stands. And so much for the Catron suggestion that the PFLP fund-raising campaign had anything to do with faux-radicalism. What a jackass! (I'm referring to his behaviour *in this instance*, not his overall character).) Still, it will be interesting to see if his massive self-regard will allow him to apologise. If it does, I'll be quite happy to let bygones be bygones, because I actually admire the work he does with the ISM and it would never enter my mind to suggest that such work was some kind of faux radicalism and carried no dangers or quote some Zionist hack saying that the US government wasn't bothered by ISM activities. It's just a pity he hasn't shown the same respect for activists who did the PFLP fundraising campaign and faced real risks in doing so.
