This whites-only figure grossly understates the numbers. Most of the African-American troops and Native Americans came from the South. The two states claimed by the Confederacy as the twelfth and thirteenth supplied massive numbers. Missouri alone sent around 110,000. Each of the other eleven provided distinct units to the Federal cause.
