In most respects, Yassin al-Haj Saleh gives a very good analysis. But I disagree with his negative view of the PYD (Democratic Union Party) and the revolutionary process it is leading in northern Syria. Saleh says: "The PKK doesn't consider itself part of the Syrian revolution. Actually they talk about a Rojava revolution." The PYD is fighting for a democratic revolution in Syria. It is not fighting for a separate Kurdish state. The predominantly Kurdish areas (Rojava) would be autonomous, but would remain part of Syria. As a step on the road to democracy in Syria as a whole, the PYD and its allies have created the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria. Local elections have been held in areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces. The SDF remains separate from both the Assad regime and those reactionary rebel groups backed by Turkey and the Gulf states. It is open to cooperation with other groups fighting for a democratic Syria. Saleh talks of "nationalist expansion that is creating ethnic tensions between Kurds and Arabs in Northern Syria." The democratic revolution has spread beyond Rojava to include predominantly Arab areas. Multi-ethnic local governments have been established throughout the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria. The SDF includes a growing number of Arab fighters.
