I was sorry to see on this morning's news (it's Thursday morning here in NZ) that Christine Keeler had died. Keeler was one of the figures at the centre of the 'Profumo Affair' in Britain in the early 1960s. And a victim of a kind of unholy coming together of the most socially reactionary Tories and the sparkly new liberal Labourites of the time. The Profumo Affair saw the destruction of Keeler, her friend Mandy-Rice Davies, the suicide of their friend Stephen Ward, the resignation of war minister John Profumo and the resignation of Tory prime minister Harold Macmillan.
