I'm not even sure if he is pretending to be a humanitarian, rather he
has to show that "US resolve" has some kind of meaning, given the
red-line the US has set against chemical weapons. Sure, Trump the
individual pretends to be upset about seeing dead children, but anyone
pretending to be a humanitarian would not have begun only when
children are killed in a chemical attack. Between late February and
late March, the Assad regime slaughtered 1700 civilians in 4 weeks
just in Ghouta. The Trump regime never uttered a word. No tears about
dead children killed by barrel bombs, cluster bombs, napalm, bunker
busters, missiles etc. One of the most intense bombing periods of the
war, all concentrated in one heavily populated working class ghetto.
Earlier, similar Assad/Putin bombing of Idlib drove many hundreds f
thousands from their homes within a few weeks. Who cared? No-one much,
certainly not Trump.

People are making comments like "the US is going to bomb Syria because
Assad killed 45 civilians, but when Israel in Gaza and KSA in Yemen
kill civilians we keep arming them. While I'm all for condemning
hypocrisy (as a side-issue), this entirely misses the point. Assad did
not kill 45 civilians. He killed countless hundreds of thousands of
civilians, literally dozens the numbers that have been killed in
Yemen, terrible as that is. Assad is not being punished for killing
hundreds of thousands of civilians, but for killing some with chemical
weapns rather than the conventional WMD that he has killed 99+% of is
victims with.
