Isn't this rather contradictory?



  Similarly, the same phenomenon probably emerges in some sector of
academia, given that rigour and opacity are a cheap way of signalling
expertise to institutions in order to justify large salaries.

On one hand, there's the claim that rigour and technicity limit access because it's very hard (expensive), and on the other hand that it's a cheap way to signal. Far be it from me to say that this notion might have benefited from some rigour.
