Note how the self-promoting rabbi that posted this drivel about Salaita is pitching her organization of rabbis as though they are part of the solution: https://www.truah.org/ Liberal Zionism is racism. The stuff Jill Jacobs says in her original piece (that Salaita is responding to) mimics almost precisely the logic of white supremacy: opposition to institutionalized, racial supremacy by one particular ethnic group over others somehow amounts to an attack or "reverse discrimination" against members of that group. You can also note that Jacobs also says that some criticism of Israel is fine, namely that which is covered by international humanitarian law & the laws of war. Effectively, she is arguing that while individual rights apply to the Palestinians, the concerns about racial supremacy effectively amount to the "reverse racism" or "white genocide" that white supremacists / white chauvinists allege in the United States: "But I also see plenty of criticism that crosses the line. Jews increasingly feel unwelcome on the left unless they abandon their commitments to Israel. A University of Virginia student told me that some progressive campus groups responded to the neo-Nazi incursions there (anti-Semitism on the right is often easier to spot) by dismissing Jewish students as “Zionist baby killers.” At rallies on college campuses, speakers regularly list “Zionists” in the same category as white supremacists and Nazis. Progressive leaders circulate lists of acceptable Jewish organizations, including only those that do not address Israel or that define themselves as Palestinian solidarity groups. If the left continues to ignore this trend, most of the Jewish community will be pushed out of progressive spaces." Translation: Saying Zionism is racism and pushing out racist Jewish groups amounts to attacking Jews. Apparently also alleging that the foremost military power in the Middle East is too powerful is also attacking Jews and is the equivalent of the Tsar of Russia alleging that Jews secretly control the Catholic Church. Note also how for Jacobs, the Jewish community being "pushed out of progressive spaces" is defined as Jewish groups not relinquishing Zionism. For her, Zionism is so intrinsic to being Jewish that to oppose Zionism amounts to pushing out the Jews -- even though one sign of anti-Semitism to her is using "Zionist" to mean a code word for "Jew". Certainly it's true that there are fringe voices that use "Zionist" as code word for "Jew," but it's odd she brings it up given that she is apparently one of those people. ?? Amith R.
