Although he died young, Fintan Lalor (1807-1849) was one of the most important republican thinkers. One of his arguments was that Repeal (ie repeal of the Act of Union, which had been the means by which Britain had basically annexed Ireland with the connivance of the Irish parliamentarians in 1801) was worthless unless there was a social revolution at the same time. Although Lalor died at the end of the famine and after having taken part in armed action during the famine, his ideas had substantial influence in the later land struggle led by Michael Davitt. Lalor can also be seen as a forerunner to Irish socialism and was much admired by James Connolly, who put together a collection of Lalor articles. I am currently in the process of getting up on *the irish revolution* blog everything I can find written by Lalor in the 1840s. This is the first and is actually a lengthy letter written by Lalor to Gavin Duffy in early 1847, covering Repeal, the land question and the weakness of 'moral force' arguments: https://theirishrevolution.wordpress.com/2016/12/16/fintan-lalor-to-gavan-duffy-on-repeal-the-land-question-and-the-weaknesses-of-moral-force/ Phil _________________________________________________________ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
