Although he died young, Fintan Lalor (1807-1849) was one of the most
important republican thinkers.  One of his arguments was that Repeal (ie
repeal of the Act of Union, which had been the means by which Britain had
basically annexed Ireland with the connivance of the Irish parliamentarians
in 1801) was worthless unless there was a social revolution at the same
time.

Although Lalor died at the end of the famine and after having taken part in
armed action during the famine, his ideas had substantial influence in the
later land struggle led by Michael Davitt.  Lalor can also be seen as a
forerunner to Irish socialism and was much admired by James Connolly, who
put together a collection of Lalor articles.

I am currently in the process of getting up on *the irish revolution* blog
everything I can find written by Lalor in the 1840s.

This is the first and is actually a lengthy letter written by Lalor to
Gavin Duffy in early 1847, covering Repeal, the land question and the
weakness of 'moral force' arguments:
