I think most of us know that, pathetically enough, the second part of the
article's title is not true.

For many years I wondered how civilized people could ignore what was
happening in Palestine, given how obvious the crimes were, how openly they
were committed, and how much fairly blatant documentary evidence existed to
corroborate the atrocities, long before smartphone cameras became
ubiquitous and they could all be recorded. And then the Syrian war (and
also the counter-revolution / coup in Egypt) happened and I realized, "Oh,
that's how."

While I think maintaining a documentary record of these kinds of atrocities
is important, I doubt it will mean that anyone will pay any price for them.
The ICC's record, even with smaller regimes that are less influential, is
pretty bad. They could not get Kenyatta, they couldn't get Omar Al Bashir.
Syria has much stronger allies than both of those regimes, and far greater
geopolitical significance. The ICC will never hold these men accountable,
and I doubt anyone else will either.
