Note: This is almost 8 years old. Also, the article appears to just be
saying that when ambassadors showed up he acted culturally Russian (e.g.
speaking the language, etc.).

As far as the political alignment between the Russian government and
Israeli fascists, consider that Lieberman and many of the far-right Israeli
constituents he represents are part of the post-USSR emigration of Russian
Jews to the Israeli state. Not sure the exact reasons, but probably
partially due to them showing up right around the time that suicide bombing
was embraced as a Palestinian resistance tactic, and partially due to the
desire of immigrants to "integrate" by embracing their new society's most
chauvinistic elements, the Russian immigrants are a strong right-wing
constituency. If Russia is trying to use their ties to these people as a
diplomatic building block with Israel's increasingly far-right government,
then that, more than Lieberman's personal charades, would explain the
alliance.
