Though the story of Reconstruction and its ultimate defeat is somewhat complicated because the overthrow of Reconstruction Governments occurred over time (from 1868 through 1877), the short version is important --- a domestic terrorist organization (the Ku Klux Klan) wore down the willingness of Northern Politicians to support with federal troops and political capital the coalition (White Republicans, newly enfranchised black freedmen) over the course of the 1970s..... The brief effort by (some) Southern Populists to unite black and white farmers during the early 1890s was defeated by the Democratic Party in the South which led white populists to support total disenfranchisement and jim crow as the 19th century drew to a close ....
