The central preoccupation of the Syrian Democratic Council is the need to deter a Turkish invasion of northern and eastern Syria. This threat is real, as shown by the Turkish invasion of Afrin and numerous statements from Erdogan threatening to invade Manbij and the areas east of the Euphrates. In this context the SDC is seeking assistance from whoever might offer it - whether this be the United States, Russia or the Assad regime. This necessitates toning down their criticisms of Assad. They don't use phrases like " filthy oligarchic dictator". They do however talk about the need to democratise Syria, which implies that the Assad regime is not democratic.
