Here is a very useful article by somebody who appears to be something of a social democrat. He, too, clearly confirms the position that this is a bonapartist regime based on the military. More important, though, are two things: 1) He says that there is about 15% support for Maduro. This would be the basis for the claims that Maduro retains his popularity. I'm sure that this 15% is fairly motivated, so it's entirely possible that they can mobilize some decent-sized rallies in favor of the government. Nevertheless, he says that the January 23 anti-Maduro rallies were absolutely massive, far larger than anything the government can mobilize and spanned the spectrum of society - from fairly well off to the extremely poor. 2) He also makes an excellent point regarding that sector of the left in countries like the US (and maybe Britain too): He takes up the position that our only role is to oppose imperialist intervention and, thereby, to support Maduro either explicitly or implicitly. He points out that Venezuelans will conclude, then, that they want nothing to do with the left and with left ideas. It will further discredit socialism within Venezuela. I think it's very important to consider that. https://www.redpepper.org.uk/we-are-confronted-by-the-threat-of-civil-war/?fbclid=IwAR3DY9P_emho8R58o_jmEY6iHWGYjyWI1LoyI3jPTKt-Ozrf1UZZBWLAfBA -- *“In politics, abstract terms conceal treachery.” *from "The Black Jacobins" by C.
