Large scale emigration from Cuba resulted from a combination of factors. The US economic blockade caused economic hardship. The threat of a US invasion created a siege mentality, in which dissent was looked upon with suspicion. The isolation of the revolution in a backward country favoured tendencies towards bureaucratisation (though Cuba did not undergo a complete bureaucratic degeneration). The alliance with the Soviet Uniion was a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it was essential for Cuba's economic and military survival. On the other hand, Soviet influence promoted tendencies towards bureaucratism and Stalinist politics. Venezula today faces similar problems. Hence the importance of campaigning against the US economic blockade and military threats.
