LOUIS' piece in response to Corey Robin jogged my memory --- I recalled the rather provocative article by Eugene Genovese (when he was still a Marxist!) entitled "The legacy of slavery and the roots of black nationalism" delivered at the Socialist Scholar's Conference in 1965 or 66 -- (it's accessible here https://digital.library.pitt.edu/islandora/object/pitt%3A31735061655803/viewer#page/1/mode/2up ) Genovese makes the same point that (probably) Robin makes --- that Booker T. Washington is really a pre-cursor (through Garvey) of what in the mid-1960s was a more left-wing version of black nationalism --- WHen my nascent political organization (The Wisconsin Alliance) created an organizing manifesto, (think that was in 1969) we included the demand for black control of black communities and the local Trotskyists were strongly supportive of that aspect of our "analysis" --- we were actually coming from the angle that informed Bill Williams -- which he supported in numerous publications ---- (I think most completely in a piece he wrote entitled "Radicals and Regionalism ...." for a short lived journal entitled democracy -- with a lower-case "d") the reactionary form of black nationalism clashed with the more revolutionary version, most dramatically and tragically, in the fight between Maulana Karenga's US movement and the Black Panther Party -- with actual guns and deaths involved --- Clarance Thomas' marriage to his current wife shows that for him the language of "black nationalism" is pure political opportunism --- and unfortunately that applied to too many so-called "militants" in the 1960s --- I could name names but who knows how many ended up actually fighting the good fight later on ...
