It is claimed that Sanders didn't plan to win as evidenced by his "injection of the 's' word" and also of his having raised the issue of Cuba. But Sanders never voluntarily raised either of these issues. Both those issues originate in statements made years ago by Sanders. In the case of socialism: During the 2016 race, he continually tried to brand himself as a "progressive", but to no avail; the capitalist media continually raised statements he'd made many years earlier on the issue of socialism. It was in reality a somewhat subtle form of red-baiting and Sanders couldn't escape it, so he embraced it. Unable to run away from it, now he's got to embrace it further. It was similar with the Cuba issue. It only came up when others attacked him for statements he'd made decades ago about some positive sides of the Castro regime. He couldn't escape those statements so he defended them. In general, I think he didn't think he could win the 2016 nomination any more than did Trump. He saw it as a protest campaign similar to that of Dennis Kucinich or others before him. But his success led him to this campaign, which he actually has nourished hopes of winning. In fact, let's remember that it was just a few weeks ago that the DNC, the political pundits and the capitalist media were all pondering the possibility - in fact what seemed the likelihood - of a Sanders plurality and a possible victory at the Democratic convention.
