Just dashed off a letter to the Bard College professor cited in this article:

Hi, Felicia

On FB today, Jeff St. Clair, the editor of Counterpunch, posted a link to the article that cites you on the connection between the loss of biodiversity and COVID-19.

I graduated from Bard in 1965 and am the film editor of Counterpunch magazine. I am 75 and living under lock-down in NYC. Last October, I had acute bronchitis for most of the month. Needless to say, I am scared to death.

I totally agree with your analysis but I have to confess my misgivings about how Bard is a sort of Jekyll-Hyde when it comes to Green issues. Leon is principled enough to hire idealistic professors but unprincipled enough to keep someone like Stewart Resnick on the board of trustees. As you probably know, Resnick and his wife Linda are two of the most ravenous consumers of water in California that is needed for their pistachios and "wonderful" pomegranates they advertised as a cancer cure, kind of like Alex Jones touting silver as a cure for COVID-19. When they are not using up so much water that farmworkers near their spread cannot flush a toilet, they are also draining the water from Fiji for their upscale tonic water geared to celebrities. To have their way, they pour millions into buying DP politicians like Diane Feinstein and rely on the Fiji military goons to protect their assets.

To put it bluntly, they are the opposite side of the coin of the Koch brothers. The Kochs destroy habitat in pursuit of oil profits while the Resnicks do the same thing for "healthy" nuts and water.

Anyhow, this has nothing to do with your important work. It is just my cri de coeur over a capitalist system that penetrates and poisons every sphere of public life, including my alma mater.
