40 years ago (1969), the College of Ethnic Studies was founded at San Francisco State University after months of sit-ins, picket lines and mass arrests (some spent months in jail) of State students demanding courses on African American, Latino/a American, Native American and Asian American studies as well as demanding more professors of color. The militancy of the State student movement was an inspiration to students of color across the country who made similar demands on their respective campuses and led to the burgeoning of ethnic studies at numerous colleges. Between Wednesday, October 7 and Friday, October 9th, panels about the history and future of ethnic studies will be held at SFSU to commemorate the founding of the College. The conference will be followed by a reception and dinner on Saturday, October 10th. At the time I was an Asian American community activist in San Francisco who supported the student activists. I have proposed a panel to the organizing committee along the following lines: "The panel members would be socialist scholars and activists of color. Each would give a short presentation of her/his proposal for the future of liberation studies for people of color in the United States." The organizing committee has expressed interest and has asked me to submit names of proposed panelists.
So, I need names of socialist academics and non-academics who are interested in being a panelist. There are no funds for stipends or travel. Please volunteer or email me names of people who may be interested in being a panelist.
