Canada Must Act to Ensure President Zelaya¹s Return to Office Declaration of September 26 Latin American Solidarity Teach-In On Saturday, September 26, a teach-in organized by the Latin American Solidarity Network was held at the University of Toronto with participation from the university community and social activists. The topics under discussion were the current political situation in Honduras, the conflictive relationship between Colombia and Venezuela due to the installation of five new U.S. military bases in Colombia, and the foreign policy of Canada and the U.S. with respect to Latin America. As a result of the different presentations and the rich debate they produced, those in attendance unanimously agreed to issue the following declaration: 1. To express strong support for President Zelaya¹s courageous return to Honduras as its legitimate president. 2. To strongly denounce the siege of the Brazilian Embassy, where President Zelaya is currently taking shelter, by the Honduran fascist military forces and the bloody repression of the Honduran people who have gathered to welcome and defend its President. 3. To denounce the fact that the gas canisters and chemicals supplied by the Israeli and Peruvian governments were used by Honduran repressive forces in an attack against the Brazilian Embassy. 4. To denounce the installation of five new U.S. military bases in Colombia. These bases pose a threat against the democratic changes undertaken in Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia. This irresponsible act by the U.S. administration will unleash a new round of arms race at levels never seen before in the region. 5. To ask the Canadian government for immediate actions supporting President Zelaya¹s return to Honduras and his restitution to the presidency as the only legitimate head of the Honduran state.
