Is Michael Smith arguing that people in the United States should be urging that all people of color and women, also be barred immediately from being in the U. S. military? That seems to be where his logic leads.
To select one group of working people, to not be allowed to participate, is not advancing the destruction of the military machine. It is only allowing the real discrimination to continue, against the one group selected out. The U. S. government is the largest single employer - if it is allowed to officially deny jobs, in whatever field, because of race, gender, or sexual orientation - it reinforces in the larger society (and in other nations) that it is okay to discrimiante and have people treated and perceived as of lesser value. The military uses this lesser of value view, to get its troops to harm and murder around the world - and to remove such thinking, hurts the military efforts, which Comrade Smith seems to have overlooked in his position. To follow his logic - it would result (and therefore be fine?) for the U. S. military to carry out violence against Gays and Lesbians in other lands, who are among those little brown people that Comrade Smith was referring to and somehow believing he was defending, by not wanting to challenge homophobia in the U. S. military. Or was it only non-Gay little brown people, that he was caring about? I assume he was not urging or believing this, but his logic leads to that result. Comrade Smith may not know, or want to acknowledge in holding his view,- to allow and ignore, or certainly not to end this discriminaton, that many Gays and Lesbians still join the U. S. military - and they hide and most do so successfully - so they can aid and abet this horrid military machine. But that is not ending, with this current Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy - and it had not in earlier times ,when many Gays and Lesbians served in earlier periods of the U. S. military. Of course having a policy at all against OPEN Gays and Lesbians, is relatively recent. The U.S. military was filled with lifers who were predominately Gay before the 20th Century! The U. S. Army was organized by a Gay male - Baron von Steuben who also founded West Point and organized the Army officer corps. And I could go on with Gays and Lesbians who were in the U. S. military - but that would require a lot longer history and email - and I want to be respectful, for being allowed to share these thoughts, which much thanks to the generosity of Comrade Proyect who supports and provides this list - and who should be thanked more often and not just criticised only, as I have seen recently.
