This review offers an intelligent critique of theism which is a step beyond the bombastic "secular fundamentalism", to borrow a phrase coined by Chris Hedges, of the new atheists such as Harris and Hitchens. Although as a buddhist practitioner I find myself more sympathetic to Armstrong's apophaticism than to other apologies for theism, the reviewer correctly concludes that Armstrong lapses into a subjectivism which ultimately negates the force of her argument. Since buddhists are not theists, (we believe that the agency behind skillful practice is wholly natural), we are not burdened by theistic concerns, but at the very least it is refreshing to see a sophisticated critique out there. One grows tiresome of the warmongering islamaphobes.
