Eli Stephens rightly points out Obama's promise during his
electioneering to escalating the war in Afghanistan. However, many
Americans may have entertained some doubt whether he will actually do
that once he was in the White House. They can be given the benefit
of doubt.

The rhetorical message of change he used to deceive and lure people
certainly worked. But what has all too often been ignored by
American commentators is the nature of American imperialism itself
that is driven by military-industrial complex and its political
apparatus. An American president is simply not in a position to
challenge such interests and remain in the White House. Such
interests make a president and shape his policies. If some 'strong
revolutionary' ( just imagine a revolutionary becoming a U.S
president!!) ever tried to break such a mould (an unlikely scenario),
that person will not be Obama.
