After a week long 'soft occupation' at UC Berkeley, the police moved in at 5am this morning and arrested 64 students who were sleeping or studying for finals. Throughout the week this 'festival of the oppressed' had teach ins, forums, classes, and so forth during this, 'read week' when no classes were scheduled. The students were hustled, many in pajamas, into waiting paddy wagons and brought to Santa Rita jail in Dublin, about 30 miles away. There was a spontaneous demonstration(s) through out the day today until those arrested were later released. Some are sill incarcerated who may of had prior civil disobedience arrests. Out come is pending. The week long occupation is part of an ongoing struggle by hundreds of thousands of students at the massive University of California, California State University and Community Collage system, one of the largest education systems in the world. Students along with faculty, staff and campus workers have struck, occupied, rallied and, above all, organized to fight the massive cutback on education through out the state. Regional meetings have been held, along with a lot of representation from K-12 teacher unions and representatives, all looking toward a March 4 general Education strike. Both the California Federation of Teacher and the California Federation of Labor have called for their member unions and locals to support the strikes and/or day of action. It has now gone national with public worker unions looking toward Mach 4th as a national day of action against recessionary budget cuts. -DW ________________________________________________ Send list submissions to: [email protected] Set your options at: http://lists.econ.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
