This comes as shock to me and I'm sure most Bay Area leftists who knew
Tom. Which, as it happens, is probably most of ALL Bay Area's left
community.

Tom was a founding member of the Peace and Freedom Party in 1968. Well
known for standing up to Eldridge Cleaver's nomination for President by
P&F and being one of the few who opposed him on the grounds of Cleaver's
views toward women. Tom was often a candidate for the P&F was
instrumental in getting the P&FP back on the ballot in the state after
the Green Party ended up getting so many votes from P&F that the party
lost it's 5% threshold on statewide offices.

Tom joined the SP after serving a stint in the U.S. Marines in the
1950s, and was in the New Yor SP when Max Max Shachtman's ISL voted to
dissolve into the party. He opposed their entry on the grounds that it
would take the SP to the right. He was, of course, understating the
situation.

Tom was a premier 'sectologist', that is, he knew of and, unlike most of
us, could recite amazing stories and vignettes about the most obscure
little leftist group in the U.S.

Tom never, ever, wavered in his 40 years in the P&F keeping the P&F, a
socialist party, away from those that would lead it into or in support
of, any of the capitalist parties. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
