Stan Goff's book Hideous Dream, in which he recounts his experience as a
Green Beret in the 1994 U.S. restoration of Aristide, goes into much detail
about how essentially Aristide was housebroken on terms acceptable to the
U.S. in order for him to be placed back into the presidency.

I read the book several years ago and thought it was excellent in providing
both a personal memoir from someone who went there with illusions he was
helping the Haitian people along with a radical political analysis. Goff
later became a leading member of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization and
an antiwar activist during the last decade.

I was happily surprised to see the full text of the book available on the
Internet at the following URL:

Apologists for Bill Clinton and for liberal interventionism
generally are fond of citing the 1994 restoration of Aristide,
at the point of US guns, as a shining example.

I was kinda distracted by various personal matters back in
'93 and '94 and I didn't follow events very closely. Somehow
I find it hard to believe that idealism and principle played
much of a role in Bill Clinton's decision to do that. But
a bit of rummaging around the Web hasn't turned up anything
like a satisfactory explanation of these events.

Does anybody on this list have his or her own theory? Has anybody
written anything illuminating on the subject?

(apologies for cross-posting)
