This is from the Australian of Jan 14th. It deserves to be used as a
classic instance of ommissio veri, not to mention commissio falsi.

"A history of coups and bloodshed...

POPULATION: More than 8.5 million, 95 per cent of whom are descendants of
African slaves. The literacy rate in 45 per cent and life expectancy is 52
years. Seventy per cent of Haitians live on less than $US2 a day...

HISTORY: Ruled for centuries by the Spanish and then the French, Haiti
gained independence in 1804. It was occupied by US Marines between 1915 and
1934. It gained notoriety for brutal dictatorships from the late 50s until
the mid-80s under Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier and his son Jean-Claude "Baby
Doc" Duvalier.

Jean Betrand Aristide, a former Roman Catholic Priest, swept to power in in
Haiti's first free elections in 1990. He was overthrown in a military coup
eight months later. In 1994, he returned to Haiti with US military help
before handing over power in 1996 to his elected successor, Rene Preval.
Aristide was re-elected in in 2000. Faced with an armed insurrection and
street protests, Aristide bowed to pressure from the US, France, and Canada
and left the country on February 24, 2004. Preval regained power in 2006.
The country has continued to be rocked by violence, including bloody feuds
between drug trafficking gangs, despite the presence of a UN stabilisation
force of 9000.
*Armed Forces: Haiti's army was dissolved in 1994. The US lifted an arms
embargo in 2006."

I should note that this morning on the most cowardly of all media outlets
the Australian Public Radio, it was just beginning to be hinted that the
priorities of the US were military rather than humanitarian. The journalist
reported that he had not seen US soldiers helping. that of course was
treated as a great unsolvable mystery by the anchor.

As far as i am aware there has been no mention of the role of Cuba or
Venezuela to date on Australian media outlets.

regards

Gary
