I wonder if it is coincidental that the term mano blanco was also used by a Salvadoran death squad during the late 1970's and early 1980's. This was at the time of the slogan "Be a patriot, kill a priest". The white hand symbol was usually painted on the doors of churches which were thought to support liberation theology and the preferential option for the poor, in other words, those who were teaching the poor to read, write, organize, and otherwise to think for themselves.
