What's new here is not the "scheme" of making Texas so important in this process, but of applying that importance to history. It all has to do with the importance of Texas schoolbook adoptions for publishers. They want their texts adopted there, so they'll shape what they publish to whatever sort of things that board comes up with... This is how kids in art history classes in Evanston, Illinois had their pictures of David covered with a fig leaf. And it has nothing to do with national educational standards, etc.... This has been going on for decades.... I'm mildly surprised that Americans on a progressive list don't know this, but more surpsied about other things... Not the least of these is the notion that America as having become more "diverse" over the past fifty years. What was it before, I wonder. Almost every observer I can recall agrees that American institutions--beneath the most superficial public facade of things--have become more corporate, regimented and conformist...
